Change the app used for OLE activation

By carlrardon ·
When you change a file association it does not change the app used to activate an embedded object. For example, I changed the file association for gif files from PhotoEditor to PhotoDraw. However when I embed a gif object, double-clicking the objectdoes not use PhotoDraw to activate it. Is there a registry tweak, or any other way, to control the app that will be used to activate an embedded object?

Change the app used for OLE activation

Most applications use the windows file associations for OLE activation. To verify your file association settings for a particular file type, for example .gif files, type the following at a command prompt:

assoc .gif

This will return the associated file type for the extension, probably .gif=giffile. Next type:

ftype giffile

This will return the exact command line used to open files associated with giffile. For other syntax info at the command line, type the following for inline help:

assoc /?
ftype /?

Some applications use embedded MIME type associations that can conflict with the windows file associations. These MIME types can generally be edited somewhere in the setup options within the application itself.

Hope this helps, -Ewing
