    Changing TCP/IP setings

    Has anyone ever heard of the default TCP/IP settings in XP changing from ?auto? to 192.168.1.1 subnet 255.255.255.0 no gateway no dns like you would use with a crossover cable for two computers?

      it will happen with any os using DHCP when the DHCP server is offline.

        When DHCP goes down Microsoft usually goes to a 169.x.x.x address.

        I would lok at the alternate address setting on the NIC. This WOULD replace the 169 addres if it were manaully added as teh alternate.
