Check out the TechRepublic Community Roadshow!
Lockedby Jay Garmon · about 19 years, 2 months ago
On Friday, Feb. 25, the diabolical minds behind the TechRepublic Discussion Center and Technical Q&A will be hosting a free, TR members-only event in Cincinnati, Ohio. Think of it as a “live action” discussion thread, with continental breakfast included. So, is this idea crazy enough to work, or just plain crazy? Share your thoughts in this discussion!
I know what you’re thinking: “I don’t live anywhere near Cincinnati, what good does this do me?”
This event is a trial balloon, designed to determine whether there is enough interest to start a full-fledged TR Community Roadshow Tour. Thus, if you can’t come to the Cincy tour stop, use this thread to post the questions or comments you would have asked had we come to your town. Beyond that, we’d like to know where to take our act next, and what topics we should cover. Post appropriate suggestions in this space as well.

A Question
by packratt · about 19 years, 2 months ago
In reply to Check out the TechRepublic Community Roadshow!
So, how’s the labor market down there in Cinci? Should I consider it as the next stop for my nomadic family and myself?
Good luck to you all, and have fun.

Labor market great if you like being unemployed or working for nothing
by juanita marquez · about 19 years, 2 months ago
In reply to A Question
People in Cincinnati are getting laid off left and right, and the pay rate for tech jobs is lower than standard market value, or even Cleveland and Columbus. I know, I’ve been trying to get back into Desktop Support for 2 years after a downsize at my old company and have had to compete with literally 200-400 other applications. Help desk jobs are getting paid $10/hour and people are actually taking them. There are too many tech people in the area to support the needs and that is driving things down for us all, and overworking the ones that have a real job. Of all the techs I know that lost their jobs, none are currently working in the tech field – they, like I, have had to take other positions to pay the bills. The place I’m currently working at has an all-temp IT force, and I’m hoping to at least break into there so I can keep up my skills and get a permanent job when I get the opportunity.

If I could afford the time away, I’d probably even make the trip (from Florida).
Suggestion: Do it in Tampa, instead.

That’s pretty cool, but I won’t be able to make it out to Ohio. You should stream and broadcast the conference. I wish that it wasn’t so far, and that I had the time to go.
Where to go? if you are going to hit Canada even once, then I would suggest either Ottawa or Toronto. What? There are other Provinces besides Ontario? Sorry… cross-Canada inside joke – might instigate negative feedback – I’m just kidding folks.

There will be a companion Webcast…
by Jay Garmon · about 19 years, 2 months ago
In reply to Jay,
…but it won’t be live. We’ll edit together something juicy out of all the live feedback we capture at the event, and post it in pretty short order. If there’s something you would have said at the Toronto tour stop, however, throw it in there now. We’ll be injecting Web-submitted comments into the discourse.

The Toronto stop is hypothetical
by Jay Garmon · about 19 years, 2 months ago

I was suggesting an “if there was a Toronto stop, what would you ask there” prompt. Cincinnati has to be a success before we get approval to actually set up a tour schedule.

I’ll be in Cleveland, Ohio – Prentice-hall IT conference
by matthew moran · about 19 years, 2 months ago
In reply to Check out the TechRepublic Community Roadshow!
Interesting concept! It is similar to one that I floated with Techies.com a few years ago. I think, if a major site like techrepublic, promoted and hosted local IT discussion groups it could catch on. I developed a model for their promotion and agenda development. I think career minded technologist could benefit greatly.
If it were a day later I might make the commute. I am presenting, The Value-added Technologist, at a Prentice-hall IT conference for college instructors and program directors in Cleveland, Ohio that same day.

Only 40 members permitted? Either TR’s user base is a HECK of a lot smaller than I thought, or there is a low confidence level this show will draw anybody.
I was expecting to see at least a couple hundred…wow…talk about small world.

We designed it to be small
by Jay Garmon · about 19 years, 2 months ago
In reply to I don’t know why this shocked me but..
We wanted this to be–for lack of a better term–an intimate event. We want very small groups, with very direct interaction. This will not be a a typical seminar where we cattle-crowd a few hundred people into an auditorium and bore them to death with a powerpoint and some talking heads. There are plenty of those already. We’re offering an uncut, high-power dose of TR.

If you’re aiming to offer an “uncut” dose of TR you should think about flying in some of the old TR writers too.
Like that Packman fella, he’s seems uncut. 😉

by apotheon · about 19 years, 2 months ago

These sound like small regional events, starting with a first-time testbed in OH, rather than major (generally annual) conference events. That being the case, keeping it smaller is good.
I’m just waiting for one in Tampa. Sign me up now for that one.

A tech masquerade? There would be a lot of heavy equipment hanging off our heads.
The best custume that I’ve ever seen was my buddy’s Hallowe’en outfit. We went to a bar… he dressed up as a Christmas tree and plugged himself into the wall. 🙂
We chose a table close to an outlet.

I love the idea. If you could point me to more information on the format, I would appreciate it. I currently live in Buffalo NY and have numberous connections with CIO’s and technical groups in the area. In fact, I am the president of one of them. I would be more than happy to publicize an event here in Buffalo if the format of the meeting was going to make the event worthwhile.
Let me know.

A number of factors
by Jay Garmon · about 19 years, 2 months ago
In reply to Why Cincinnati?
But mostly, we wanted a “secondary” market with a high concentration of large (100+ headcount) employers. We felt that was a good match with our topic–companies with a high headcount tend to really care about end-user control. It also needed to meet certain cost and travel contraints, which I won’t go into.

“Maxwell Edison” has developed quite an “online” persona, at least I think he has. On one hand, I wouldn’t want to do anything to change that — you know, keep the mystique going. On the other hand, I think it would be a real hoot.Maybe I’ll come and pretend I’m really ____________________ . Could I have fun with that, or what?

…If you wanted to appear as “Maxwell Edison” without using you’re real name, we’d work something out. If you really wanted to go the extra mile, we’d even spot you a Lone Ranger mask.
Of course, we’d also make delicious fun of you, but that’s beside the point.

I’d love to go, but my commitments that week make it impossible to get away. When you take your road-show somewhere between 600 and 1200 miles further west on I-70 from Cincinnati, it might be easier for me to attend. And I wouldn’t even wear a mask. (But you might see a guy wearing medical scrubs and carrying a silver hammer walk in.)

Dallas’ Reunion Arena

In reply to Check out the TechRepublic Community Roadshow!
The City of Dallas is *begging* for someone to use Reunion Arena for this kind of stuff. Mayor Miller seems to be totally willing to take a loss on renting it out cheap, if it’ll just generate some business activity.
… but isn’t taking a chat room on the road an awful lot like snail-mailing banner ads?

confusion of terms
by apotheon · about 19 years, 2 months ago
In reply to Dallas’ Reunion Arena
This isn’t technically a “chatroom”. Chatrooms, by definition, are realtime, whereas this involves persistent message posting. In other words, this is a “discussion forum”, as opposed to a “chatroom”.
I’ve also seen IMs get the “chatroom” label, though that’s not really accurate either. I’m not sure what prompts all the world to call everything that happens online a “chatroom”.

—– —– —– —– —–Well – it’s a lot like the way most automobile’s are called “cars”.
Sure – you and I know about RSS, UseNet, NNTP, SMTP, HTTP, Discussion Groups, IM, chat, etc., etc. – but to REAL people, they’re all just “chat rooms”.
