Cisco 851W and dynamic DNS setup.

By openmandate ·
I've called Cisco on this a couple of times for pre-sales support. They insist that the 851W supports dynamic DNS. Can anyone offer configuration information for setting up an 851W with dyndns.org, either instructions or links?

Cheers,

DDNS setup Cisco IOS

by jcadams01 In reply to Cisco 851W and DDNS

First and fore-most Cisco's documentation
Using telnet (the IOS console interface)
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/sw/iosswrel/ps5413/products_feature_guide09186a0080359e69.html
Here is a good example for No-IP.com
http://www.no-ip.com/support/guides/routers/using_cisco_routers_with_no-ip.html

That's probably still clear as MUD too most ;)... so I'll try and post a SDM setup l8r...

OK, so... This is for Using Security Device Manager(hence SDM).. NOT! SDM Express... to setup with DYNDNS.com (also .org) you'll need to install SDM to your PC from the supplied CD from Cisco. My advice us DON'T Install it to the router unless you like poor performance

Once your logged into the SDM app...
1. Choose <Additional Tasks> from the Icons on the Left.

2.From the Additional Tasks Tree Choose "Dynamic DNS Methods" The Pane on the Right will most likely be blank.

3.Click the <Add> button.

4.From the <Server> drop down box choose members.dyndns.org

5 When you setup an account with DYNDNS you choose an ID and password. Enter those values in the Username and password fields.

6. Ignore IETF for now, most likely it does not apply to your particular situation.

7. Click the <OK> button.

8. Last but not least You will want to save your config. Choose the "Configuration Management" Option from the Tree(It's at the bottom) Then choose "Config Editor" Click on the "I Agree" button.

I HOPE this help'd Y'all!...

P.S. DYNDNS discourages configing your router for some reason... hmmm Don't really know Y. But that said, this setup works for me just fine...

Cisco 851W and Dynamic DNS setup

by BlkShdw187 In reply to Cisco 851W and dynamic DN ...

There are two way of setting up Dynamic DNS. This first way is by going logging into the SDM and select configure, from confiure select Additional tasks. Here you will see Dynamic DNS Methods, Select this and click add. Choose you Dynamic server which would be members.dyndns.org. Enter your username and password and click ok. or you can use this commandline entry.

ip cef
ip auth-proxy max-nodata-conns 3
ip admission max-nodata-conns 3
no ip bootp server
ip name-server (1st dns ip address)
ip name-server (2nd dns ip address)
ip ddns update method sdm_ddns1
HTTP
add http://(your username):(your password)@members.dyndns.org/nic/update?system=dyndns&hostname=<h>&myip=<a>
remove http://(your username):(your password)@members.dyndns.org/nic/update?system=dyndns&hostname=<h>&myip=<a>

The second way is by downloading the Dynamic DNS software from dyndns.org and run it as a service on your computer and it will keep you dynamic ip address up date.

Let me know if I can be of any other assistance

Cisco 851W and Dynamic DNS setup

by srikant_2006 In reply to Cisco 851W and Dynamic DN ...

Hi BlkShdw187

I am new to Cisco products.

I used your 2nd method to access my office PC. I also port forwarded to access exact my PC. Now I can access successfully

I am planning to create VPN server using Cisco router with dynamic IP. Here I can use your first method to synchronize my changed IP with Dyndns.com. Why don't we need port forward here?

Is this because that we are directly connected to router

This question may be funny but your is value for me

Thanks
