You need a Win95 boot disk, a win95 boot disk and a place to backup any data you need to keep. The boot disk can be down loaded off of the internet and the way you save what you need is up to you. You boot to the win95 floppy and type format c: /s /u answer yes to all, hit esc twice. Then reboot with the win98 floppy it should find your cdrom! Then cd to the cdrom drive letter and type setup or if your computer can boot from the cd let it do that and follow the prompts.

1. Backup all critical files and settings.

2. If you do not have one, create a Windows 98 startup disk.
(Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, Startup Disk tab)

3. Download and store all device drivers for your system:
Motherboard / chipset
Video card
Direct X (Microsoft)
Modem
Sound card.
Make sure to read the instructions for each driver

4. Boot from the floppy, and format your C: drive
(format c: /u)

Have the Windows 98 CD in the CD drive.

Type setup and press enter
Follow the on screen prompts.
I allways select custom, and choose the options I want to install.

5. Install drivers in the following order;
Motherboard / chipset
DirectX
Video card
Modem
Sound card

Connect to the internet, and run Windows update
Select only those updates you desire.

Run scandisk and defrag

Install your applications.

If you want to clean out all of the old installation you need to format your hd. First make a bootable diskette. Second put the disk into the floppy drive. Third restart your pc and when you get to the a: prompt change the prompt to C: then enter. fourth type in format c: and hit enter. The message all data will be lost yes or no. select yes. After the format is complete reboot and select with CDRom support. At the C: prompt change to the drive or whatever drive assignment your CDR is and type in setup. follow the instructions and you are home free. Before you do this make sure you have all of your drivers for your sound, video, modem ect. and any documents you want to keep saved to a floppy or zip drive. Once you have finished your install you do not need to defrag. You might want to run scandisk as a precaution. Good Luck
