Client Outlook settings on W2K Pro

By ckwhittle ·
Hi, I am trying to set up Oulook and Internet Explorer settings for users on Win 2K Pro computers. I currently have to give the user Power User authority, change their password, and sign on as that user to complete the settings for the computers.Does anyone know of a way to accomplish this without having to sign on as the end user?

Thanks

The user settings are only completed when I sign on as the user that will be using the PC, and set their individual mail settings.

You can log on as the administrator and then start up Outlook. When outlook asks you for the Info it needs to connect to the mailbox you want to use (Exchange or Internet Email) hit cancel that way when the user logs on they will not need Power Userrights.
If your users dont know how to set up an Outlook account then I think you are out of luck.

There is also another way of doing this.
You can use the deploying way of setting up Office 2000 (or just Outlook) and that way you can use the %username& variable to set it up automaticlly but that only works if you use Exchange server.

There is a supported method of doing this, you need some tools which I believe are in the exchange resource kit. Let me know if you have trouble getting them.
the files are profgen.exe, newprof.exe and a .prf file. we run it as a logon script for new users, the syntax being

if not exist "%userprofile%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\outlook.ost" profgen.exe newprof.exe -P outlook.prf -R -N -U

Note thats all on one line. The prf file contains the customised outlook settings that you want to apply when the profile is generated, and uses the %username% variable as your previous respondent mentioned. Im guessing that the previous respondent hasn't tried to distribute outlook (at least 2000) with a transforms file as hesuggests - its buggy as ****. searching on technet may give you more info on profgen, I haven't tried looking myself.
