cloning win2k3 server

By rain_kitten ·
I have a server with c/d on the same drive and e on a second drive. the d partition has not had any software installed and only contains downloaded data the shared data that was on it has since been moved to e. I am trying to move the c partition to a different drive taking the whole drive by its self as d is no longer needed. I atempted to use ghost to do so but get a security error when booting and am unable to boot to directory restore mode to fix it. the c/d drive works just fine. no mater the switches and such i used for ghost it still errors out. I was wondering if i was missing somthing or if there was a incompatibility. I did notice that after ghosting the data was about 200 mb larger on the ghosted drive and 500 less files then the original.

instead of ghost try using partition magic to merge the partitions

partition magic is now requireing a server edition to modify a hdd with any server os on it. at enterprise expense.

I would avoid Drive Imaging programs all-together for this one.

If I understand, you have two partitions on Drive 0 and want to delete the second (D:) partition, expanding the first partition (C:) to fill the entire drive.

I would use Acronis Disk Director. Install that program onto a second computer. It will allow you to create a bootable floppy or CD-ROM that you can put into your server. Boot to it and you will have the option to delete the second partition then expand the first.

You may run into issues though with your server hardware. Are you running any type of RAID, or SATA. What type of RAID Controller/Drive combo are you using. Depending on your answers here, we may have to help you create a bootable floppy with some DOS RAID drivers. One step at a time though.

It is a low end dell server ata only. The client is wanting to make any changes to the spare disk rather then the current one. At the time it seemed rather straight forword, ghost and expand partition during process but who knows.. I will be seeing if acronis has the features to solve this. I am not at this location currently, and the client is having to follow instructions. Ill be on site in a mo and will most likely fix it then

Acronis true image did not work. I was getting lass errors. "lass objectname already exists" unfortunatly the copy of partition magic doesnt support server versions.

this problem seems to require software not ment for small businesses. I may investigate more at another date. acronis true image may work well or not i need to see what small business server is doing to keep it from working. I needed a server version for partition magic which would cost a bundle as would the acronis program
