Command In Dos to recognize CD ROM on Wi

By georgie8 ·
Have a game that is to be played in DOS. Game plays off a CD. When I go to DOS and try to install DOS cannot recognize my CD ROM. CD ROM is new and operating OK. Having no hardware problems.

Is there a command?

The initial answer did not consider the config.sys file. With an initial setup, the CD is set up in dos in both the config.sys and the autoexec.bat file. Then, as win95/98 installs, these lines are automatically rem'ed out and the CD is installed via Windws.

Using the un-rem approach, I would check both the config.sys and the autoexec.bat files. Further, I would also consider setting up a separate boot disk, at least until I was sure what would happen when Windows is rebooted with the modified files;e., boot off a floppy, setting up the drive using the autoexec and config files. Further, more than likely, you will also need to set up drivers for your mouse, etc.

I have noted this problem, both with the mouse and the CD drive; however, I have not atempted to date to modify the startup for the type of DOS boot you are attempting. It MAY impact Windows 95/98 on reboot; or, Windows may simply re-rem the files, in which case the next time you want to play the game you will have to go through the same p

The above answers are correct in a few ways but unfortunatley some Cd Rom drives do need a dos driver to work correctly under Win95/98 so try it both ways with the drive rem 'd out in not, if still have a problem go to http://www.winfiles.com/ and you wil find your device manufacturer there and download the lastest drivers. Another thing is i have heard Win98 does not really like dos base programs, i have never tried to run one so i cant say for sure.

You can also set up a shortcut in Win98 that forces a reboot to DOS and establishes DOS environments for that DOS session including the CD Rom drivers. You should have a line in your config.sys that looks like;
DEVICE=c:\*.sys /D:CDROM1, where * is theame of the driver for your CDrom drive. Then in the autoexec.bat you should have a line that looks like; C:\MSCDEX.EXE /D:CDROM1.

The drive should have come with a driver disk. If thats true just go to an a:prompt and type install. It will install the needed drivers in the autoexec.bat and the config.sys. Reboot and the cd-rom should be recoginized in DOS. You may need to install thse same driver line fronm the autoexec.bat into in the Dosstart.bat file if the first option does not work. If you do not have a driver disk you can download just about any driver from drivers.com.
