Comp. Freezes Monitor Goes Blank

By axp275 ·
Summary of Equipment List

Intel D850GB Mainboard
PIV 1.5ghz 423pin
256mb Memory
40gb WD HD
HP CD Writer
ATI Rage Fury Pro
Soundblaster Live! Xgamer
3COM 10/100mb NIC
Princeton Graphics AGF 900

When my computer works it works perfectly until all of the sudden the screen goes blank and after a few seconds the monitor reports no signal. The power to the computer is still on and if I watch the HD light will occasionally blink. I cannot do anything except turn off the power and startit up again. Sometimes it will run 3 or 4 days without this behavior. Most of the time it happens when I'm not using the computer but the last few days it's done it while I'm using it. I'm running Windows 2000 Pro and have all the SP's and updated drivers for everything. Can anyone shed light on what I should try to correct it. I don't have adequate extra hardware to start swapping parts in and out. Reloading the hard disk takes days to recover. :) I'd appreciate some guidance on this ifanyone can help, thanks.

This problem could be a number of things that may be causing this to happen.

When did this problem start to happen? Was there any new hardware added?

Things that I would check to troubleshoot what seems to be a intermittent problem

Power Supply-does it have enough wattage to support system

CPU-make sure that it is seated correctly and not overheating

Memory-is seated in the slots properly

NIC card is working properly

Video card is working properly and you have updated drivers

If everything else checks out then it could be that you have a bad motherboard

It started happening about 4 months ago. Frequency increased as time passed. No new hardware. Power suppy is 300w (more than enough). Have checked all of the rest already. Video card seems to work fine. I'm leaning towards the mainboard but not sure how I can verify without swapping in a new board. Grrrr. Don't have one.

Sounds like a power management settings issue. How about checking the power management settings for the monitor/video card, PC, and in the BIOS/CMOS?

The second part of the problem (where it is going to sleep on you while you're working) is beginning to sound like a hardware problem. Just to make sure, though, disable all power management features and see if that stops the problem.

Hope this helps. If not, email me and we'll look a bit deeper into the problem.

Regards,
Allan

Don't overlook the simple solutions.
I had the exact same symptoms. It drove me crazy trying to figure it out.
The power connector from the power supply to the system board was not fully seated. After I clicked it into place I never had the trouble again.

I had a similar problem when I imaged over a hard drive from an old Dell to a newer Dell. The old Dell had an Nvidia video card and when I switched over to the new box and installed the new ATI drivers it was still trying to use the old video drivers. No signal to the monitor, but the computer was still running. Check to make sure that no other video drivers are installed on your box.

sounds like its either a faulty graphic card or some hardware in the pc that is causing the pc to hang.
