Compaq will not restore after format

By Casemaker ·
Hi,
I have a pc that the customer told me he tried to format. It is a
Compaq Presario 5528 running W95. The customer said he tried to format it and then it would not do a restore. He said someone told him to remove pin 1 which the manuak says clears cmos. No matter what I try it will not boot into the Compaq floppy or run the cd. It won't boot into Tuf Test Check It or Microscope. I put it into another pc and the disks worked but said that I could not use them on this pc (it was IBM).
I have used boot disks and dos disks and no results.
Thanks

use a 98 boot disk and run fdisk. Look to see that the partitions are correct. You may find an additional small partition that contains compaq drivers. fdisk the drive and then format it again. Then use a standard win95 cd to install. You will then need to pull the necessary drivers off compaq's website to reach full functionality. Compaq has a proprietary bios-set up for their machines only.
any problems, post a comment and we will go from there.
good luck!

It does not permit me to boot with the W98 disk. It starts, does a memory check and tries to boot but clicks into the A drive and sits there with the cursor blinking and the floppy light on.

GFL - With answer #1 You found out about Compaq's propietary disk management, clearing CMOS will help to try for disk access. But without a Compaq computer and the Compaq bootable floppy you will get nowhere (BEEN THERE), the proprietary disk partitioning and software are a hard combination to crack, tried.

Also their help desk is GREAT, if you would like to use their product as a boat anchor. Otherwise you are pretty much on your own if it is over 1-year old. Sorry about the commentary. They do supply a quick restore disk to restore the system to the BOUGHT state, if warranty is not out, this is in extremely small letters on the disclaimer in the hardware documentation. Be forceful if you do not have the software and they will send it to you, although warranty runs out in 12 months the software is required to be sent.

If memory serves me correctly it is a 8M non-dos partition then the dos - bootable partition, check documentation it is burried in the book.

GOOD LUCK!

I have both the floppy and cd rom that the restore calls for. Problem, it won't boot into the flopy. On the IBM it would boot into the flopy using the same HDD but because it was not Compqaq I could not use it. With a W98 floppy it wont boot, however, with a me floppy it boots into it and ask if you want cd support then can't find the cd. and freezes with the blinking cursor.
