Computer freezes every 30 minutes or so

By msevilla ·
Why does the computer freeze after 30 minutes or so? I am not neccesarily using an application when it happens. I reboot the computer and it unfreezes but then after a while it freezes again; is there something that I can do to stop it from freezingwhen it wants?

Given the level of detail given I can only guess.

My first guess, is that it is a heat problem. It could be that your CPU fan is dead or clogged with dust bunnies. It takes a while for the heat to build up to a level where the cpu can not function.

My second guess, is that its a software problem (activeX or some dll). The best solution for that is getting a utility suite like Nortron System Works and doing a system check up.

Good luck.

I've seen this one time: check that the machine is on a separate electrical circuit from -- water cooler, air conditioner, refrigerator, etc, basically compressors cause a sag on the line when they fire up. . cheers.

I like answer #1 from a hardware perspective.
In addition to the CPU fan, the power supply could be overheating and causing the system to lock.

While you have the case open, remove and re-seat the RAM modules.

I would also check for adware / spyware causing a memory leak.
A good utility to check for adware is AdAware from Lavasoft (www.lavasoftusa.com)

I haven't used any of the memory leak tools myself, so I don't have a favorite.
Check your favorite download site.

Hi,

All I can say check for hardware compatibility, this will be one of the cause of the problem of freezing...especially on graphic video cards. Check also for the video cards drivers. This is the only reason why some pc freeze. Hope this helpa bit.

May I add that you check your current power management settings.

It is possible that your hard disk is set to shutdown after 30 mins of inactivity and that your hard disk does not support this.

Also check that you have SMART for Hard disk enabled in your BIOS should you want power management for your hard disk enabled.

Also check if you have any screen savers set at 30 mins. Some screen savers are not compatible with Windows and may cause the system to hang, freeze or respond erratically. Try disabling any screen savers just to check.

You can also check if you have any scheduler programs or programs with schedule functions that would activate after 30 mins of inactivity. Background antivirus checking / scandisk / defragment programs can sometimes be unnoticed and CPU busy state misinterpreted as a freeze.

Good luck.
