Computer slows to a hault

By lbarthels ·
I have a computer that loads fine, but after about 1 minute of just doing a simple task such as win explorer, the mouse starts to slow and eventually I cannot use the system at all. I have removed everything that loads in the tray. I have uninstalled Macaffee and any other not normal program. I have deleted the temp file also. Any ideas that don't involve formatting and reinstalling all the software?

Here are a few tips

-remove any background images

-open the windows.ini file in notepad
look under load= and run= and remove any entries

-scandisk (thorough)
-defrag hard drive
-drop your windows cd in and run setup
(the install will not wipe any of your settings)
-remove the video adapter from the device manager and reboot, if the video card is not auto detected run the hardware wizard, download a new driver if necessary.

I have more but these almost always work

This is fairly straightforward to troubleshoot.
First:
Start-Programs-Accessories-System Tools-(click on)System Information
In the System Information Window click on Tools to get the tools menue.
Click on System Configuration Utility.
Select the Startup tab.
Uncheck boxes one at a time, and boot, until the problem disappears. Obviously, the last box check mark you cleared, was the problem.
You don't want to delete the Temp directory on C: during this test.
Just the opposite. There should be a Temp directory on C: , and there should be the commands SET TEMP=C:\TEMP and the command SET TMP=C:\TEMP in AUTOEXEC.BAT

Check you cooling fan on your CPU. It sounds like you may have an overheating problem. While you have the case opened, give it a good cleaning and make sure that the case fan(s) are operating.

Paul.
