By tantek ·
I need to run a computer with 6 monitors viewing 6 different web pages. I want to know if this is possible and what motherboard and graphics cards should I be looking at.

Things like the Samsung 23inch Multi-Display Monitor (MD230X6) is what you want.

and if you don't want to spend $4k(AU)

If is just web pages then any old graphics card can display that. Just grab yourself a couple of pci-e cards with three outputs (vga/dvi/hdmi) which are pretty cheap and common. Then all you need is a mb that can take them, ideally one with two pci-e x16 slots although speed will not be important so any two slots ought to work. Then you need a stand that will mount 6 monitors unless you are planning to line them up on a desk or wall mount them. Then all you need to do is configure them within the os.

The better question is why 6 monitors? Just to throw this out there but running Firefox with the Tab Mix Plus addon you can configure it to automatically switch between tabs every 0-999 seconds which would display 6 web-pages in turn and would cost significantly less.

Really, a bit of context is useful.

You will probably need a mother board with 3 PCI e16 slots

by Slayer_ In reply to computer with 6 monitors

Unles you can located 3 PCI video cards and a mother board with 3 PCI slots.

Each card will support two monitors. I have seen some that support 3 but they are expensive.

If the motherboard supports integrated graphics and you can enable them at the same time as the cards, then you could use two cards, the integrated, and buy yourself a USB monitor expansion. These are mini video cards that plug into a USB port and provide another monitor. Most of these I have tried so far only allow one of them to be plugged in at a time, so you would still need multiple video cards.

3 monitor support is not expensive these days.

It doesn't say that it supports 3 displays at the same time. I suspect if you try, DVI and HDMI will fight for control, or will clone each other.

I know my 9600GT has 2 DVI's and S-Video, but the s-video can't be used if both DVI's are in use. It just doesn't turn on.

You're correct i was a little flippant when choosing an example, but i have seen triple cards. A little looking and the ati radeon family e.g. http://www.amd.com/US/PRODUCTS/DESKTOP/GRAPHICS/AMD-RADEON-HD-6000/HD-6450/Pages/amd-radeon-hd-6450-overview.aspx
have
AMD Eyefinity multi-display technology
Native support for up to 3 simultaneous displays
Up to 4 displays supported with DisplayPort 1.2 Multi-Stream Transport
Independent resolutions, refresh rates, color controls, and video overlays
Display grouping
Combine multiple displays to behave like a single large display

and you can get the Asus ATI Radeon 650 HD from

multi monitor

by steve1084 In reply to computer with 6 monitors

Hi, You will need all monitors to have "Display Port" and a graphics card that supports 6 monitors via "Display-Port" If you don't use display-port you will need to buy Active adapters as all graphics cards can only support 2 monitors that do not use display-port ATI 6790 or better will do the job. Also its best if all monitors are the same brand and resolution
