Configuring SBS 2K3 to relay Internet Mail

    by robrobbins02 ·

I have a client who just installed a SBS 2K3 server. They would like to use Exchange to share Contacts/Calendar throughout the company (3 computers). They are using Comcast for email. How would I configure Exchange so that the mail is stored on the SBS Server and relayed to outside contacts and not on the clients through POP3.

      Unsupported or hosted.

What I have seen people do is setup the Exchange server, configure Outlook for the Exchange server, and then configure Outlook to deliver the POP3 mail and put the POP3 mail in the Exchange mailbox. I have not seen this as a solution that Microsoft supports but I have seen it work. I think you would have to set the primary email address in Exchange to be the POP email address so when they sent an email people could reply. When they reply it will use the email account that received the email to send the email. If you are going to go through the trouble of setting up a server it would be better to not have the POP3 and just setup the server the right way. If cost and support is an issue then they should have Exchange hosted offsite.
