Connect a Win 2k Server to Novell Server

By jalluri ·
I have a client which whom I'm setting up a new Windows 2000 Network for. They have an older Novell Server with data on it that I need to move over to 2000. They want to leave the existing Novell Server up for a while as a safegaurd. How do I configure the new Windows 2000 Server to talk with the Novell Server so I can transfer files? I'm not familiar with Novell, just 2k. Not sure of the version of the Novell Server either.

Thanks.

You could install Gateway Service for Netware or the Microsoft client for Netware.

Need more input...Once I install the client for Netware, what do I need to do to connect them? Do I have to install the Gateway Service for Netware also, or just one client?

If you install the Netware client on the individual machines they will see the Netware box the same as the W2K box. If you install the gateway, they will access the Netware box through the W2K box. You will access the Netware through NWLink (IPX) if 4 or below.

This helps. Thanks for the quick response. One more question...I really only need the 2 servers to talk to each other, not the clients. I'm more concerned about setting up the Win 2k Server to see the Novell Server. That's it! No Clients!
Thanks.

Try this link:

Double-home the W2K box and connect it to the Netware box via a crossover cable. Be sure to enable IP forwarding on both interfaces. That way your users won't be able to go around.

This has been a big help! One last question...how do you enable IP forwarding on the Novell Server? - and what does double-home the W2k box mean?

Thanks again.

Double-homing is installing two network interfaces in the same box. Each has its own IP address. You will need the NWLINK protocol to talk to the Netware box if it uses IPX (be sure to use the proper frame type, 802.2 or 802.3, it's specified in the Autoexec.ncf file). IP forwarding is set on the W2K box and it will let the two NICs talk to each other, like a router. Setting IP forwarding in W2K is a little harder than in NT, you have to edit the registry to do it. It's covered at support.microsoft.com under Q230082.

Are there any issues with having "rights" to view and copy any files on the Netware to the Microsoft Server?

You have totally helped me! Thanks a lot! Very much appreciated!

Ideally you should attach to the Netware box as Admin, which gives you full rights. You need to have at least Read and File Scan to be able to see all files and folders. This reference might help: http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/docs/Netmigrate.doc
