Conneting to Web Server as Web Folder

By YN0T ·
Facts:
Windows 2000 Server, w/IIS 5.0, Front Page Server extensions are not installed. Web folders created with appropriate permissions.

Problems:
From Internet Explorer (5.x or greater)I try File | Open | http://www.something.edu/DirectoryName/MyNameselect OPEN AS WEB FOLDER. Fails at least 50 percent of the time, from at least 50 percent of the PC's (both Windows 98 and Windows 2000) always using the same login. On the failures I either receive repeated prompts for user name/password and never connect or I receive a message that says "Web Folders could not be opened do you want to open them in Folder View". If I select Yes to Folder View they do open in Folder View. I've tried repeated tests on the same PC's with the same login, sometimes I am able to access web folders sometimes I can not. Does not seem to be a client issue as sometimes it does work, does not seem to be a server issue as some PC's are able to open Web Folders consistently. We have tried capturing packetswith a sniffer and nothing unusual has been recorded on the unsuccessful attempts.

Conneting to Web Server as Web Folder

Off the top of my head sounds like a permissions problem. Are you using local or domain permissions? If domain, try using local to login to the webpage. Maybe if you are logging in with a domain account it is not hitting a DC everytime. As a test create a local user that has admin rights and try that. If it works everytime start narrowing down from there.

Good luck.

It sounds like a permissions problem.
The client and the web server should be using the same domain for validation.
If the client is not logged to a domain he may be prompted for a user+password (from the domain account) or a password only. In this last case, the userid will be the userid logged to the local machine, and the same userid must exist in the domain list (but obvious with another password.) This relays on the w9x client version (service packs)
If the web have a local accounts andpermissions, and the users are logged to a domain, the user if from the local machine will be send as the web server user, weather or not you were prompted for a user+password. (not a bug! it's windows!)

Good luck
