Constant Lock Up's

We have a AMD K6 233, 32 meg SDRAM, Win 98,
and the machine constantly reboots, and sometimes hangs for no apparent reason. Suspected EDO memory so replaced with SDRAM. SUspected shared video memory so installed a 16 MEG PCI graphics card. What else could it be? The motherboard does not support sleep mode. It will work for hours one day, then the next hang up every 5 minutes. Struggling!

I replaced those memory chips to and found
if they arent in all the way things funny
happen. I installed three cards memory type
and booted the system was slow but did work.
then adding the fourth card and powerup a
active machine working sound but no picture
so i redid it and bingo picture.

Do you think that your battery is low or
maybe going out on you that might nrrd to
be replaced by a added plugin type. lastly
the cpu chip might seen its last days that
would effect bootupsand other problems. Just
a few ideas for you.

I do not exactly have an answer for you; however, I have had a similar problem with a Cyrix MMX 200, Win95, Win98 and Win98SE, 64MB of memory.
I have noticed that when it happens and I attempt a reboot, rather than a complete shutdown and restart, I will not infrequently get a bad memory error on the restart.

I have had this problem since Win95 although it seems to happen more often with Win98 and Win98SE. It suspect it has something to do with the display and video based on the Win troubleshooting suggestions; however, I have not been able to isolate it.

In exasperation, due to this and several other crash problems, I deleted Windows completely and reinstalled it. (If you do this, make sure you back up any common files in the Windows directory you may need such as the Outlook or other mail addresses, indexes, ect. I didn't do this -- I backed up the indexes, but missed the contents which were in Windows not Outlook.)
I reinstalled Win and my applications. This seemed to help, but did not elimin

If you use win98 there is an issue resolved by Microsoft( patch can be found in Microsft Win98 download site.) Moreover, if I were You I would go into BIOS setup and disable all powersaving futures. There are several hooks from BIOS into APM module, which frequently causes "hangs". Furthermore, goto into Win98 power control panel and choose "Always On" setting, with options to never power off HDD. You should A OK after...

The obvious question I don't think has been asked: Is this software of hardware. The test here is to try to run the computer in safe-mode and see if the problem recurrs there. If it does, then the question becomes what software is causing this. Adetailed cleen boot will allow you to isolate the problem (or you could format an reinstall).

If it doesn't appear to be software, then try unseating and reseating the main cables (including HDD and Floppy), memory cards, etc. Also ensure that your cpu is not overheating.
