Converting .wma files to .mp3

By winmorgan ·
Very grateful if anyone can help with this. When I burn a CD from LPs and then put the CD in a Dell running Windows XP Pro, all the files appear as .wma files. Nero says it can't recognize them or convert them. IN other words, I can't take a .wma file and put it in a Nero compilation to burn it without further steps: I have to open CoolEdit Pro and convert them one at a time to .mp3 (Nero says it doesn't recognize the file type, and CoolEdit says the same thing when I try batch convert.) Doing them one at a time finally gets it done and then I can burn a CD with the resultant .mp3 files.

Is there ANY other way to handle these files without so much hand-holding and trouble? My Mac handles this chore with almost no problem. To say that I loathe Mr. Gates and Windows would be entirely gartuitous...having said that, both are loathsome. Despite that beef, I'm stuck using Windows and would like to find some way to handle these files without having to do what amounts to two conversions because Nero and CoolEdit don't seem to read .wma files.

Thanks for any and all help,

Win

You need to un-associate media files with Windows Media Player.

Start by installing a 3rd party media player such as WinAmp.
www.winamp.com

Associate ALL media types with Winamp to **** away the associations to Windows Media Player.

You still need to convert files if you wish to change from the CD-Audio format to MP3.

There are a number of other media players out there that will handle the different file types better.

Since you are using nero, you might want to try feurio.

Win,

It appears you are using Windows Media Player to do the actual conversion from LP's to CD's. I was pretty sure that Nero can convert WMA files. Either it is the version of Nero that you are using (I use version 5), or the files are corrupted. Can you play the files inside of Windows Media Player directly? If Media Player gives the same error, then something went wrong with the original conversion process.

However, one converting program that I use to switch back and forth to WMA, MP3, WAV, etc. is dbpoweramp. You can download the main application and modules from this site: http://www.dbpoweramp.com/

It is one of the best converting programs I've seen and I have been using it for some time. It can even record directly from LP's to your computer in whatever format you desire (straight MP3's or WAV). Then you can use Nero to burn to Audio CD.

This should help...

WinMorgan, just wanted to also add that dbpoweramp is a suite of audio converters/burner/player. You can just download the components you are most interested in. In your case you will need specifically: dbPowerAmpMusicConverter. Straight out of the box dMC can convert to and from Wave, Mp3 and from CD Audio (CDA) files. You will have to download the Codec (module) for WMA right off of their site.

Nero can convert them but the WMA-plugin is required. Search nero's site for the plugin.
