Corupted Hard Drive???

By lump_16 ·
Lately my HD has been getting bad sectors on it. So I ran the Microsoft backup utility and decided instead of spending 5 hours transfering the backup file through our old network (ARCNET) I'd just put the hard drive into another computer and transfer the files to another HD that way.
I got everything swapped no prob and it booted up and found the HD in boot screen no prob. Problem came when I got into Windows to start transfering. My drive now shows as "dL_c)o_\" along with a few other various symbols. So my whole drive is now in greek, goobley **** whatever you want to call it.

The only thing I can think of at this point was that I forgot to swap the jumper from master to slave whne I swapped it to the other computer.

Any help on this matter would be greatly appreaciated.

Thanks for your time,

The concern is whether the disk is fully corrupted, take the ribbon cable a loose from the good drive and check to see if the corrupted drive will boot,if not you have lost it,now try the other driver with the cable disconnected from the corrupted drive, now look for third party to restore data or last resort FDISK.

one possible problem could be the hard drive has been incorrectly identified by the cmos (bios) setup. You may also have a virus.
something to look into but that would be secondary
good luck

False alarm, that's what it was. Somthign with a diffrent BIOS in the other computer that woudln't recognize it. I put the drive backin my computer and jsut spent about 6 - 7 hours transfering my back up to another computer.
Thanks for the quick responses though.

Sound like a virus or a failing hard drive to me than any thing else. Try scanning the hard disk with a virus scanner, and if it fails to find a virus. Try to run scandisk or some ohter disk utlity to check for errors and physical disk problems. Ifneither works delete all the partitions and re-partition it and also reformat it to see if that corrects the problem. If none of these tactics work then the hard drive's magnetic integraty is failing and eventually it will no longer be able to storedata.
