Creating a second Domain

By jsarinana ·
I have one NT 4 Domain running
1 PDC with DNS, WINS & DHCP
1 BDC with DNS, WINS & DHCP
2 file servers on the same subnet

I would like to install a second Domain on a new NT 4 server on the same network using the same subnet. I would then like to access the first Domain from the new NT 4 server and mirror/copy the data from the both file servers. Any suggestions would be greatly appriciated.

Creating a second Domain

I assume that you are talking about adding a new NT 4.0 Domain which involves a PDC and maybe also a BDC. Otherwise (just a DNS domain) you just join the existing NT 4.0 domain and in DNS you create a new Domain.
To add a new NT Domain just setup your new PDC and create a new Domain with a new WINS Server, the fact that it exists on the same subnet as the other NT Domain shouldn't make any trouble, as long as any computer that belongs to domain x uses that WINS server, and any computer that belongs to domain z uses that WINS server. However I'm not sure how NT Domains are implemented when using DNS on NT 4. So if you have clients that find the domain using DNS I'm not sure if this is going to work. I can only tell you that I guess that itwill work. I don't see any problem. You can try it out if it makes any problems just take it off, and create a new subnet.
Once you succeeded in setting up the second domain (which i mentioned sholdn't be any problem). Then you will have to create a trust between those 2 domains. If the only thing you will do will be that domain 2 will access domain 1 data, than the trust has to be created like this:
domain one -----Trust----->domain 2 which means that domain one trusts domain 2, in the abovecase, Domain one is the trusting domain and domain 2 is the trusted domain. In other words domain 1 will trust any account from domain one.
For the mirror or copying you can use a batch file to copy everything; That can be accomplished using the copy or xcopy command. However this will not work if the files to be copied are in use. If it is in use, then you will have to get a 3rd party program that will do that for you. One such program you can get from Veritas it's called Veritas Storage Replicator. More info on that product can be found at:
