Creating NTFS Partition with 8 GB

By teo ·
As NTFS supports up to 4 terabyte size, in the process of instaaling nt, I can only specify 4016 MB size for a new partition and converted to NTFS. Is there a way to expand the size to 8 GB using 1 drive letter ?

Thank you

4 GB is the largest system partition you can create. As for secondary partitions, the 4 GB limit is gone.

Hi!

As stated above 4Gb is the largest system partition you can create, but in my own experience you should keep it at or below 2Gb, since when booting all OSes need to use the computers BIOS and the current PC architecture for that cannot handlemore than 1024 cylinders in boot partition.

It sux I know, but hey not many would want to drop backward compatibility in order to fix things like this.

It appears that you are installing your disk as FAT and not NTFS. The max size for NT FAT is 4 GB. I would go through setupo again and you should be asked if you want to convert to NTFS, say yes, and it will give you the option for maximum possible size. You should be good to go.

1. Create boot/system partition using winnt setup in bounds of first 1024 cylinders of the hard drive. Leave other disk space free.
When NT will be installed run "Disk Administrator", select both NTFS partition and free space (click mouse on NTFS, press Ctrl and click on free space), right click mouse and choose "Extend Volume Set..." menu, enter summary volume set size in dialog box (don't change value for use whole disk space) and click "OK". So you have two partitions combined in one volumeset referred by one drive letter.
OR
2. Use PowerQuest "Partition Magic" (http://www.powerquest.com/) for create/move/resize NTFS partitions. But don't forget boot partition must be at first 1024 cylinders.
