My friend was given a computer, no software came with it. In order to play the games, she needs 256 colors. What driver would possibly come close to work?

there is one built into windows that will probably work, depending on your video card...configure the drivers list to 'show all compatible devices' then pick SVGA.
to get this really working right, you need to know your model of video card. watch the screen carefully when you first turn on the computer. the video card might 'flash' it's name and you can catch it maybe and we can help you get the truly correct driver for it. there are other ways too, write back if you need more help...

You need to identify the video adapter and chipset on the motherboard.

A free tool to help is available at www.belarc.com

Download the Free Belarc Advisor, and run it on her system.

Then, check the specifications for the video card.

Hopefully, the card supports the resolution you need, and the driver is available.

A source I use to find drivers is www.driverguide.com

You need to register, but the site is free.
