Boot the computer into safe mode, then open Device Manager and check the Controllers to see if their is a exclamtion if their is then you will need to reinstall the dirvers for them.

Highlight the cd-rom and then click the properties button and check to see what is listed under the Performance

Using the sytem startup disk insert in floppy drive and boot computer and then choose to run setup without cd-rom support,at the command prompt
type SYS C: to reinstall the system files, windows 98 startup disk has generic cd-rom drivers insta

Run the anti-virus program to check the system fo any viruses to rule this out

If all else does not seem to work try deleting the cd-rom and reinstalling from the software disc.

Try installing the DOS drivers for your CD-ROM drive - usually found on the floppy that came with the drive. Do this by booting to 'Command Prompt Only'. After that, boot into normal mode, not safe mode - you don't have CD support in safe mode. See if your CD-ROM drive works now. If so, go into the 'System Properties' window - right-click on 'My computer' then click 'properties'. Click the 'Performance' tab. It may say something about being in 'DOS compatibility mode'. If so, click the 'DeviceManager' tab and see if your CD-ROM drive is listed - it probably isn't. Look for any yellow exclamation points, especially under the 'Hard Disk Controllers' heading. If you see one, highlight the device then click the 'Remove' button. Reboot the system if possible - you may just have to hit reset. It should then find new hardware and load the appropriate drivers. If not, go into safe mode and remove all hard disk controllers from within 'Device Manager'. Restart the system. It should find the devices you removed and attempt to load the drivers. If the correct drivers can't be found or if you still have trouble, go to the web site of the motherboard manufacturer and look for updated IDE and/or mini-port drivers. Download and install them and your CD-ROM should be good to go.
