Data Mining Overview and Neural Networks

By krthode ·
I really need to bring myself up to speed on Data Mining tools, techniques and technologies. The problem is that I have discovered that many of the data mining techniques use quite advanced ideas from computer science, such as decision trees and neural networks, but I don't really understand what neural networks is about.

So I was wondering, if you could give me a quick guide to neural networks technique and, in particular, answer some simple questions for me, namely;

1) How does the neural network technique work?
2) Why is it used in data mining?
3) Is it useful for any particular situations?

and, finally, can you recommend a good set of books and articles for me to follow up and find out more.

Kind regards

Me too. I have read a few articles on this & I am finding an awful lot of marketing BS & very little that seems like the writer knows what they talking about.

You need to get away from the general computer gee whiz press & focus in on computer science in academia & engineering professionals such as

My URLs are not ideal, just starting points, because while I do some data mining, I am using the simplest of tools in IBM's Universal Sata Base & none of our files are much over a million records.

When you get to really large files that are supposed to interconnect properly & there are tons of rules & codes, how do you find when some are messed up. You have to do some kind of pattern analysis, such as http://www.unbeatenpathintl.com/Needle%20.html (Software to find Needle in a Haystack)There is a concept known as EXPERT SOFTWARE which learns from pattern analysis of your data & generally this stuff either works exceptionally well, or is a piece of crud, and from the marketing you cannot tell which is which in advance.

Another place to look might be http://www.bourkeconsulting.com (bunch of white papers to download about industry applications) http://www.apics.org
