DDS-3 24gb DAT Autoloader Tape drive

By digitweak ·
I'm currently looking for a dependable, cost effective, autoloader for our server here. The WinNT4Server/70gig array is about 2/3 full, and I'm currently running a Tecmar drive(single tape DDS-3...24gb)w/Veritas Exec 7.3. On fridays the drive is scheduled for its "normal" backup. The problem is: its taking up to 3tapes for the process.Hence, forcing me to come in on Saturdays to moniter the darn thing and change tapes.
My question: can i just add an "autloader" to my internal Tecmar? Should I just consider moving to the DDS-4 instead?
And which products should I be looking for?

Here is half of your answer. Never worked with a Tecmar so I can not answer any specifics on it. I would definetely reccomend going to DDS-4 but still using a autoloader. DDS-4 only goes to 40GB under compression but the DDS-4 hardware is much faster and of course is backward compatitable. I would guess that you will not be able to add a autoloader to your existing drive and will have to buy new tape harware. All of the autoloaders that I have seen are always external devices.

Unfortunately, nearly all autoloaders integrate a tape drive(s) to ensure autoloader functionality. Additionally, most autoloaders are external SCSI-attached devices. The exception being several autoloaders based on DAT drive technology. There areseveral DAT-based autoloaders that use a 5.25-inch internal drive bay.

Regarding DDS-4, you should consider your current backup requirements as well as future needs. You should also consider what your backup "window" is. Will DDS-4 backup the dataset in your backup window or will you need a higher performance device such as AIT, 8mm or DLT?
