Dear Brits....

By onbliss ·
...now that the Shilpa Shetty hoopla/joke has died down, what are your thoughts about the entire racket?

Reality TV programmes are just not my cup of tea, and I do not watch them. But I think improving the programme's TV ratings was at the core of the incident. I was surprised that Blair and Brown were dragged down into making comments about the episode. Did they succumb to the vote-bank politics? Or did you think there was really some racism involved? The Indian media were making hay when the Sun shone. Now they must have gone to the next "big" thing. How did the British media react?

Hmm... or did you not even know about this? :-)

Not even know?

by gadgetgirl In reply to Dear Brits....

notacatinhellschance!

It's been all over the damn media since it started.

It seems to have promoted her career, as she is now rumoured to be getting a starring role with Huge Grant in his next flick.

It looks for the most part to be a publicity stunt - but if it was, it has backfired severely. Jade whatserface has always had anger management problems (according to the media, it showed through on a few real life series she's done on her own) But Jo Whosit from SClub999 had to be taken into protective custody because of death threats.

(again, all gleaned from early morning news tv - haven't watched the shows; can't stand this reality stuff)

The excerpt I did see showed distinct bullying, with a racist tinge, but nothing that would have rocked the boat if the media hadn't made so much of it.

It belies belief that this was raised politically; proof that the media will do anything for a story, I think. (IMHO)

Max Clifford has now become her media rep, and where all the other contestants have given all fees for subsequent interviews to charity, Shilpa will not state where her interview fees are going....! (and, believe me, she's given more than a few interviews; you should see all the TV, Womens and Entertainment magazines this week - they all have her picture on the front cover!)

'bliss, I tried not to know about it, but was overwhelmed by media. Sad, but very true!

I tried to not watch programmes based on this incident. But there were just too many. In one of those programmes, the British economist/politician Lord Meghnad Desai quipped about "Big Brother" as a "Third rate show watched by third rate people".

Looks like Jade Goody had to face the backfire. But if she plays her cards well she could even make use of her new gained notoriety. :-) Heard there were some offers for her too....

They just perfected the art of making reality TV shows.

ps: GG, by the way, I am yet to order my new cell phone :-)

So what do you think about it?

Honestly?

by Steffi28 In reply to :-)

I really dont care.

Its a load of crap and I havent seen the clip yet but I know English media, it will of been blown out of proportion, and why should we all be bothered if someone was racist on the TV it didnt offend me personally, and I know (or hope) that most of the rest of the country isnt like that. Also no one in there right mind would see Jade Goody as a role model so its not going to increase the amount of racism, so why the big deal?

A friend of mine had to put up with worse than that every day of her life in school so just because its not on TV that makes it any less of a big thing. Theres people that put up with a lot more than what she got off Jade, and yes granted Jade shouldnt of said it but is that any reason for politicians to get involved, unless of course they have only just, because of BB, realised that theres a racism problem in UK. If they have, then our government is worse than I thought!

Media

It is just not the English media. I do not know much about the rest of the world; but in my opinion the media in USA, England and India seem to be alike in many ways.

Jade Goody

by neilb@uk In reply to Dear Brits....

Rose to celebrity-hood on the back of finishing third (I think) in an earlier non-celebrity big brother. She was characterised by being particularly ignorant and seems, for a while, to have struck a chord with a host of like-minded slappers who worship on the altar of minor celebrity in the UK. She got together a fortune rumoured to be ?8m and then, I think, the inevitable jealousy kicked in and people realised what a no-trick pony she was. By the time she got on the fateful BB, though, I think she believed her own publicity. She was racist in the thoughtless, casual way that an awful lot of people are - but have sense enough to be that way in private - but was extremely bullying and the press decided that the time had come. They - the media - are a lot more astute than Goody, saw which way the wind blew and decided to rip her apart for the further amusement of the masses. This they proceeded to do - and do ...

I suppose that Jade Goody was best summed up by Jeremy Clarkson "racist, pig-faced waste of blood and organs". But I though that long before BB as I'm not a fan of talentless celebrities (hence why I'm a republican).

But, following that idea, I'm not sure what use Clarkson is in the great scheme of things. AND he reckons Global Warming is a con...

Neil

No. I didn't watch it but we got so many clips on every news bulletin that I might just well have done.

Media: The Creator and The Destroyer

by onbliss In reply to Jade Goody

Looks like essentially that is what things came down to. You summed it so brilliantly

It would horrify all of us, if only we all knew each other's inner most thoughts and what we said and how we conducted ourselves in private.

An interesting question would be is "Why did the wind **** in the direction that it blew"? A far more sinister question would be "How are the Europeans handling the massive immigrants from Asia and Africa?" "Are they overwhelmed?"
