Defrag on SQL.70

By mcalhoun ·
We are currently running SQL 7.0 on HP LH4.
The Database resides on Raid 0+1 HP Raid controller which consists of 6 18gig 10,000RPM Drives. We have about 25 gig of available space. We are running Diskeeper 4.0 running every two hours which reports that the partition is about 88%
fragmentent. I have scheduled a defrag while the SQL database was down and it didn't make any improvemants. Also ran the directory consolidation. In addition I installed Norton's Speed Disk which didn't do anything.
Does anyone else have this kind of problem?
What can we do?

Any comments will be greatly appriciated!

Those toold on't generally work on SQL type databases. The are designed for file systems. Since the database is essentially 1 file, the fragmentation of a database occurs in that file and these tool will not help since the file is not movable. Thereshould be some utility built into the database that performs compaction which will reduce fragmentation of the database. It may not help your case, but if you are experiencing latency in the database I would start with those tools.

Hi,

You will have to setup database maintainece with SQL Emterprise manager. This is easy to do, and thier is a wizard to guide you through the process. You will need to reindex the database. There are options to remove the free space as well. This should reduce the size and fragmentation of the datasbe. Hope this helps.

Joe

SYSTEM should have full control under properties | security | permissions for Diskeeper to have any effect on the file.
