Deploying win2k Server

By birhane6 ·
i am thinking of implementing win2k enviroment in the following procedure.
1- DC: first i will install win2k server with the help of smart start for compaq.
then i will install active directory.
2 DNS - on the second machine i will install win2k server and and configure DNS.

so my question now is how is the procedure to install the DC(active directory and win2k server)
and the DNS server too? and also any addtional thing that i have to do to configure it properly.

i will be also glad if you can share me your ideas on how to implement groups and ou's and also
to creat users using templates.

thanx a lot for your attention and help

You have to keep in mind that the first DC you install will be the root of your new domain structure. DNS must either already be available, or installed during DCPromo. I recommend the latter. It has been my experience that it just works better that way. You can always move DNS to another DC at a later time. Configure it as Standard Primary, then once it is working, upgrade to AD Intergrated. Create a reverse lookup zone as well, and configured as standard primary. It seems like you are on the right track with two DC's, for fault tolerance. I would worry about the other issues later. AD depends on DNS exclusively, and if it is not running correctly, neither is your domain. You should have a plan in place for groups and OU's as well. There are many different factors that will define the way you apply OU's and groups. Some companies do it by departments, others do it by physical or geographic locations. You have to take the time to sit down and think this through. If you are unsure about your ability to do this, maybe you should contact a professional. I do not mean to insult your ability in any way, but if this is a production environment, you want to be better safe than sorry.

Feel free to email me if you have any questions.

Hi

First you should install dns on the second machine and you should check the connectivity between two machines before insatlling dc on the first machine by using ping commnad. Before running dcpromo command, make sure that machine should have static ip address and in dns server tab ip address of other machine is specifed. Once you confirm all this run dcpromo.

Another method is just run dcpromo on first machine it will automatically install dns server, then make second machine as a partof your domain and install additional dns server on that machine and replicate the zone

I recommend you to use second method
Hope this will solve your proble. Feel free to email me
