It depends on what you really want to do. If you will be doing things on your own, the platform does not matter too much. If you will be working for clients, find out (before you buy), what systems your clients tend to have, and what they will expect from you in terms of formats. (Example -- if you will be doing art layouts for a client who only uses Macintosh, plan to have a Macintosh.)

If you plan to do a simple newsletter, Microsoft Word, or similar, should do the job. You can use it on aP133 with 32K, but of course more speed and memory is much better.

If you plan to get into serious publications, where you will be dealing with high quality color or with very complex layouts, plan to spend some serious money on software.

QuarkXpress is the tool of choice for layout. There is a PC version, but most ad agencies, art shops, and trade shops tend to use the Macintosh version.

Adobe Photoshop is still the tool of choice for color picture manipulation. There are both PC andMac versions.

In general, if you plan to deal with color, plan to buy as much memory as your machine can hold, and a large fast disk. A high-resolution color picture can use megabytes per square inch. If you are doing retouching, you WILL be swapping to disk, no matter how much RAM you have. Again, while a slow computer will work, faster is better.

Good luck.
