Desltop and taskbar keep refreshing

By EStreetJerseyGirl ·
My computer keeps refreshing the desktop and taskbar for no apparent reason. I'll open up a window and all of a sudden, all the icons on my desktop disappear, as does the taskbar, and a few seconds later, they come back, but all the wondows I had open are now closed. It's not any window in particular that makes it close; I could be in C:\Program Files or F:\Pics, it doesn't matter.

Can someone PLEASE tell me how to make my PC stop refreshing the desktop??

A few possibilities:

1. Check the free space on the hard disk. Strange things like this sometimes occur when the disk is full because there is no free space to use for virtual memory.
2. Hit CTRL+ALT+DEL and open task manager. See how many apps are running that you don't know about. Some that you may not recognize are necessary but look for junk like GATOR or other spyware. If you find a lot of apps running you don't recognize check your startup folder and remove anything you don't need there. Then go to ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS in the Control Panel and uninstall any software you don't need. BE CAREFUL!
3. Scan for viruses. Make sure you have the latest virus definitions.

Thanx... but I did all 3 and they don't help. I update and run antivirus every day; I have over a gig of free space on each of my hard drives, and I don't have any unnecessary things running.

It sounds to me more like explorer.exe crashing over and over again (if you hit Alt+Ctrl+Del and finish task exporer.exe, and then start it again, you'll see the same thing, but slowly). Make sure you've cleaned your system from virus/spyware/etc.
If you still have the problem, try repairing your Windows installation.

Thanx! After I had installed XP, I converted the drive my OS is on from FAT32 to NTFS, and that's when it started going skitzy on me. I converted it back to FAT32 withPartition Magic 8.0 and it's running a little better, but I think I'm gonna have to try to repair Windows, too.
