DHCP and IP Addressing

By jalexander ·
Is there a way to have DHCP assign IP but only for valid MAC addresses? These addresses would be designated by the administrator to get an IP. If the MAC address is not part of the list then the PC would no get an IP.
Any thoughts or ideas are much appreciated!!

Thanks!

Jeremy

The only way to do this is to create a reservation within DHCP. This reservation ties an specific IP address to a specific MAC address.

Next you would create a scope that is only large enough to cover the authorized PCs.

The end effect is that ALL IP addresses in the scope are tied to the MAC addresses of authorized PCs, leaving none available to be assigned to unauthorized PCs. The authorized PCs essentially end up with fixed IP addresses, although the addresses are assigned via DHCP.
