DHCP client can't get IP

By nickm ·
I have 21 machines that all are on a novell network and all will log into the network fine under IPX and you have complete access via IPX to the network, problems is the DHCP client can't get an IP address. Although many other machines on the same network work fine. I have tried to renew the addresses manually and even formatted and re-installed the OS and still get the same problem. I can put a nic from another machine that I know is working and it works fine then.

When I put the original nic back in nothing. I don't understand how all these machines could have bad nics at the same time when they were working in thier previous location. Then I attempted to setup 11 Dell system which all have the same problem. I also have 75 digital computers that came from the same location as the others and they all work fine.

Could it be the nic's?
Strange thing is they are all 3Com 3C905B-Tx cards in all of them except the Dell Machines which are 3C920's which are basicaly the same thing only intergrated.

How can all these nics be bad at the same time?

Any sugesstions would be greatly appreciated.
Its getting hard to go to my boss and tell him that they are all bad at the same time when he knew they were working in the other location they were in.

I cant explain it but I had similar experiences with the deminsion series from dell. For some reason the windows sockets that were installed from oem were not working. We upgraded the OS with non oem OS and all problems went away.

i am not sure but one thing i clear, your server is registering mac address of nic, ie., when u change the nic u can get ip addres if you changed to old nic u can't get the ip address, so try to register the mac addresses in you server.

i hope this will solve your problem.

If you run the DOS command IPCONFIG on the Dell Systems, what IP address does it give and is it outside of the range of IP addresses? The IP address you see may give you a clue as to where to proceed next.
Have you tried to IPCONFIG/RELEASE [adaptor] the IP adddress of the adaptor? Were the Dells moved from within the same domain or a different domain? If different, did you unjoin the old domain before trying to join the new one? Were the computer names changed?

As it turned out the Novell server had dhcp configure to assign ip's with no experation. Before these machines entered the network aproximately 50 Mac's were removed from the network. Problem was that the IP scope had been depleted and there were nomore IP's left in the scope so the new machines entering the network were not assigned an IP.

Resetting the entire scope resolved the problem.
The catch here is that Novell gives no indication that this is the problem the only error generated isthat the DHCP server is unreachable, not that the scope had reached its limit. which gives no indication what the real problem is. I think this is a bug or something overlooked in its novells DHCP servers design. Sure caused me alot of problems.

Anyway your answer got mr looking in the right direction thanks.
