Dial-Up Network and MSGSRV32.EXE problem

By Kakarot ·
Here's a major problem that I can't find any answers to. I just got a new computer with Win98 SE this month, and everything was fine, until I tried to dial in. At the time of the first problem, I had AOL 5.0 (I know I know, it's horrible) and NetZero. When I tried dialing in with either one of those, my display would freeze, and NetZero wouldn't even start dialing. When I hit Ctrl+Alt+Del I saw that Msgsrv32 was Not Responding. So I end tasked it, and the display came right back to functioning, and NetZero would start dialing. However, msgsrv32.exe (I later learned) is essential for certain things within windows. The main function is that it stabilizes and restarts the explorer shell when in fact it crashes. So any time explorer shut down when I was online, and Ctrl+Alt+Del reboot was the only way to get out of the problem. Also there were more minor problems with the display after end tasking Msgsrv32. The Msgsrv32 would also stop responding anytime a call came in while thephone line was plugged into the comp (without me being online). I reformatted, reinstalled EVERYTHING, and the problem STILL occurs. I don't know what to do, I've been searching for an answer. Can someone who knows what they're doing please help me get rid of this error. I've tried so many proposed solutions that haven't worked. Thank you very much to whoever can help.

Sincerely,
DA

Dial-Up Network and MSGSRV32.EXE problem

by Metalhead In reply to Dial-Up Network and MSGSR ...

I read an article recently that said that MSGSRV32.EXE was having problems with Sound cards and Modem cards that used the C-Media CMI8330 chip.

One of the symptoms was system hanging.

Check if your modem uses this chip.

If yes check out

Did you check your modem? Seems that your modem is the cause, not the sound card. Did you check to see if your modem has the chip set in question?
Is your modem a PCI card? Did you try re-arranging the PCI cards?
Had a similar problem (not exactlythe same) after talking with tech support (for the NIC) they told me that their card needed to be in the Primary PCI slot. Didn't know that there was a Primary PCI slot, but after changing the PCI cards around it work.

You've probably already tried, just asking.

This is going to sound crazy, but...

Did you install your printer driver when the system first booted up, either when new or after the format & reinstall? I used to do phone support at Toshiba, and we were walking people thru full reinstalls of Windows when we first started getting MSGSRV32 errors. Turned out that installing the printer when it was detected by Windows was an issue. It caused all kinds of odd problems, sometimes after a month or more of proper functioning.

Try this...
Delete your printer icon, including any related files the computer asks about.
In Windows Explorer, navigate to Windows\Inf folder.
Delete PRTUPD.INF file.
Reboot.
Cancel the printer install when Windows redetects.
After reboot is complete, install your printer.

I told you it would sound crazy. Hope it helps.

Are you running Norton Antivirus? If so did you get updates in june -july period? If yes I read an article in pc magazine recently that these updates had a problem. And "Msgsrv32" error would come up or lock up. Check Nortons website for fix. I believe you had to del the updates in question and re download them.

Good luck

martin
