Dial-up Settings

By gustavo_betancourt ·
When I set up the dial-up settings in Internet Explorer, I set it up so that it "never dials a connection." Users take their laptops out of their docking stations and use dial up networking at home to connect to the corporate LAN. Very ofthen, Whenthe user connects back to the LAN locally at the office, the dial-up setting for Internet Explorer will change back to "Always dial my default connection." Does anybody know of a fix for this?

Dial-up Settings

You've probably answered your own question when you said 'very ofen..', unless this is an 'everytime' thing, I'd suspect your users are making that change when dialing in from home, and then forgetting they did so by the time they get back to the office.

I've never had Explorer 'change' the settings on it's own. I have had several remote users, especially those who don't dial in from remote locations regularly, change the settings, and then have problems when they're back at the home office.

You might try producing a detailed list of instructions for the user to follow when:
1) preparing to dial in remotely
2) returning to the office network

This should go a long way to cut down on your help desk calls.

Thank you for the response. However, users are not making the change manually because that is not the way they dial in. In my location, we train users to use dial-up first and then access the Internet. This has even happened to our Network Administrator and I know for a fact, that he did not make such a change and then forgot to change the setting back when coming back into the office.

You're welcome, You may not believe the Admin wouldn't forget.. but we 'all' forget things.

If this happened *everytime* a user dialed in from home (and I do hope you don't believe users only do what you 'train' them to do), I'd agree with you. That it's a 'very often' thing suggests, to me, that there's at least some degree of user intervention in this problem.

Are you able to duplicate the problem when following your instructions to the letter? If not, I'd still suggest you look further, as in have a user show you *exactly* what they do to 'dial-in'... I'm thinking they use the settings to dial a local ISP, or click on internet explorer before they 'dialed in' and letting IE make the connection... try it... you'll see IE likes todo whatever it did 'last'...

Good luck
