dial up w/multiline phone system

By Rick H ·
How can I connect to the internet using dial up when our office has a multi line phone system? I unhooked the main cord from my phone at the wall, and hooked the laptop to that jack. I don't think it's getting a dial tone because I can't select a line. What can I do????
Thanks,
Rick

The problem is probably caused by your internal 'phone central' system. You probably need a BUS-0 addon which can be added to your normal work telephone (if the phone has this ability) to support dialup from modems. Thus you need to connect your dialup through the phone to connect outside.

Check your documentation or the provider of the phone central.

A computer modem expects an analog, 2-wire "POTS" (for Plain Old Telephone Serice) line. If you have more then 2 lines delivered to your telephone deskset over a standard (looking) 4-wire telephone cord, you don't have that. Some manufacturers have adapters for the desksets that provide analog ports, others have provisions for analog ports (for "single-line" phones) at the switch or PBX. What's your phone system? We can probably help if you provide a little more info...
