Digital video archiving software

By gorjan_i ·
I was recently asked to implement an solution for archiving digital video assets of a TV Station I'm working at.

Currently, they are storing everything on a DVD's, but more professional and reliable solution must be implemented. The real problem is that it needs to be cheap!

I wonder is there any low cost software for managing those media files, archiving them on some NAS or any other simple storage system.

I'm aware of a total archiving solution that requires investments in both hardware and software, that would make my headaches go, but I need to do this with a very limited budget. I mean, VERY limited!

Any suggestion or experiences would help.

Video Archive Solutions

I too am on the lookout for the 'cheap' option. However, a lot depends on what you are prepared to do 'long hand'. The hardest part is the recording of everything you have archived and where you will find it when you want it. We have been using EMC Retrospect for putting original EX media and final edit output records onto LTO tapes via a single drive on a dedicated PC. Backup sets are labeled by project and records of which part of the backup set contains which snapshots are kept in spreadsheets. This is OK when you are creating the archive and details are still fresh in people's minds about what is what. In years to come I can imagine it being a nightmare to find what you want. The same applies to your present DVD method.
This is leading me to search for inexpensive archive database tools. But 'database' and 'inexpensive' do seem to be two mutually exclusive terms!
To date I am following up on www.xendata.com who do a video archiver already in use by some broadcasters and www.point.de who have a generic archiver. Both support single LTO drives. I have yet to learn how expensive they are.
