Direct Cable between Win XP to Win98 .

By alan.robinson14 ·
Doesn't work.

Laptop Win XP. Desktop Win98. Lapink Parallel cable between both. Setup everything correctly, I believe. Wizard on XP appears to be the problem. It connects OK "veryies User name and passowrd". two tv screens appear bottom left, not quite sure why, flashes occasionally but unable to map network drive. Just receives about 25,000 bytes every 10 minutes. Does not connect. Is the problem encryption! I've tried everything.

Did you set the Win98 computer's Username in the Control Panel --> Users --> access control list.

You may need to run the Laplink software on the Win98 box and there you should get the two side-by-side screens.

Which version of Laplink software do you have? Does it support WinXP?

Both computers need to be running the Laplink software in order to communicate with each other through the parallel ports.

Have Laplink Professional, but need Laplink Gold for Win XP. Too expensive, trying without laplink.

I get the feeling you are trying to use direct parallel with the inbuilt windows software, rather than Laplink software. Yes?

If so, and you are running XP (Pro I would guess) with passwords and simple file sharing disabled - ie, like a 2000 machine, you will probably have difficulty accessing the shared resources on the Win XP machine, because of the limits of the interface. I couldn't get it working either in that situation. It would log on, but wouldn't access the shares on the XP box.

You might have more success using Laplink software.

Could be better to by a couple of NICs and a cross over UTP cable and do it that way - much more reliable and keeps the security system in XP a lot happier. Somewhere in the back of my mind is a comment along the lines of the direct parallel connection only works XP to XP, but I am not sure on that.

Donate the laplink software to your local WM company and build or purchase a crossover cat5 cable. And networkcards if your two pcs dont have them(they will need them eventualy anyway).

a crossover cable is a 568a on one end and a 568b on the other. this will allow you to hook two pcs together regardless of their OS and they will be on the same network (provided by you the user)

I can provide you with all the knowledge for the IP address configs for the machines if you email me.

This is much easier, and I find it to run faster than the parallel cable.

Oh, and you will be able to share the internet connection from xp to the laptop also.

If you want to spend another 20 bucks, for get the crossover cable, get two straight cables, and a network hub. Then plug both into the hub. The crossover cable is realy only good for two computers, or traveling to fix someones pc so you dont have to carry a hub around.
