Director of MIS Job Description

By chenning ·
I am applying for positon as Director of MIS. Although I've been in the IT industry for 15 years and have managed software developers and data centers, I have never held a position with that specific title. What would you say is a generic description of a Director of MIS so I can prepare for the questions that might be asked during an interview?

Director of MIS Job Description

You are sort of shooting in the dark here. If you go to 15 different businesses and ask for the job description for a Director of MIS, you will get back 15 different responses.

In some companies, the MIS Director may oversee all things computer-related, where in others, the MIS Director is is only involved in maintaining business processes that are heavily computer dependent. Almost always, this job involves management.

Usually the skills necessary include people management, budget preparation, project management, resource management, technical knowledge, general knowledge of business practices, etc.

You can get a good idea of what the employer is expecting of his MIS Director by looking at the job requirements adn expected duties. If you can't meet all his requirements, no matter what other expertise you might have, you are probably fighting an uphill battle.

Hope this helps.

This will of course vary from company to company. Here's a pretty good description though:

M A N A G E M E N T I N F O R M A T I O N
S Y S T E M S D I R E C T O R S

WHAT THEY DO
The MIS Director or Manager has overall responsibility formanaging information systems and computing resources for an entire organization. This person must determine the needs of the user community, make sure that the organization is providing systems that meet those needs, and act as liaison between uppermanagement and an organization's computer staff (data processing, information systems, network services and the like).
Some more specific responsibilities are to:

Evaluate use of technology in the organization
Recommend improvements in technology (hardware and software upgrades)
Manage back-up and security systems
Develop a disaster recovery plan
Oversee the organization's communications network
Manage user services such as Help Desk and training
Hire, train, and supervise Information Systems staff
Manage the department's budget
Develop a strategic computing plan for the entire organization
Stay abreast of advances in technology.
In a large organization, the MIS director or manager is usually a vice president with broad executive decision-making power over all departments falling under the aegis of Information Services. These departments may include Computer Operations, Systems and Programming, Technical Support Services, and Network Services. In smaller organizations, this position can be hands-on, with the MIS manager participating directly in day-to-day activities, or directly supervising technicians.

LIKELY EMPLOYERS
Any organization with significant computing needs.

No, Seriously - a Director of MIS is basically responsible for being a leader. This includes

Direction the department is going to go technically, in the loop on critical projects, budget, development of staff, teambuilding, etc.

The IT director is really the person who serves to understand what the needs of his/her staff are to bring them to a higher level of productivity.
Everything that comprises leadership is the responsibility.

Honestly if you have to ask this question, you don't know much about leadership and I suggest you read lots and lots of books on leadership and then try asking yourself this question again.
