Directory services error in Event log

By DiggerB ·
We are running a mixed mode win2k network and one of our win2k server, the proxy server, is now not allowing anyone to access it via a share or for backup. Investigating the event logs shows a Directory Servcie error of:

Error 6(6) has occurred (internal Error 321058c)Please contact Microsoft Product support services.

As well as this, the server has disappeared from Active Directory Users and Computers to be replaced by the details of what it was called when it was a NT4 server 9 months ago.

I have also noticed that in the AD it looks as if people have been adding Domain controllers and then just diconnecting them leaving the entries in the AD.

Any sensible ideas / suggestions greatly appreciated.

Directory services error in Event log

oh! as far as i see here you have a bigger problem than yur initial problem you have posted here.

I would be really concerned that (people) have the authoruty to add DC`s to your initial network setup, so! first of all i would sort out the problem of ADMINS or users with more priveledges than they should have and remove any DC`s or for that matter M/Server`s and clients machines that shouldnt have access to your network! ie: delegate control to certain ADMINS of any OU`s in your organisation and or Domain level.

SECURITY! SECURITY! SECURITY!

Now for the initial problem,if you add (on your 2k PDC) the (everyone) group to the (pre windows 2000 compatible access) you should be able to gain access to your server.

hope this helps.

A couple of Q`s

1,was this 2k server an upgrade from NT4?
2,was it taken offline before upgrade if so?

DC were added by previous admin's who only had NT4 domain knowledge. Security is correct, knowledge not.

1) yes
2) yes
