I don't think that you can disable this option mainly because it was put there to speed up opening OE. Once you get to a certain size of stored files on Outlook Express the time taken to open allows down dramatically so MS included this option to overcome this problem that everyone was complaining about.

If you don't want to compress these files to allow OE to open faster I think that you'll find you are stuck with this pop up and you'll have to continue answering No till you eventually give in and compress the files. This doesn't hurt anything and if you need to reinstall Windows you can import the compressed files straight into OE without a problem so over all other than a performance issue it makes no difference.

There is no way to disable it, but if you manually compress your folders from time to time, you don't get the popup anymore. I find that when I do my other scheduled maintence on the computer, I do that too.

Disable the Compress in outlook express

by nanasaheb1982 In reply to disable compress in outlo ...

You can't disable the prompt to compact (compress) your emails. It kicks in automatically when you've opened/closed OE 100 times. What you can do, however, is reset the counter in the Registry so it won't nag you again till OE has again been opened/closed another 100 times.

I've pulled the following registry fix from another website:

"If you don't want to compact for reasons of your own and you are skilled in using the registry, check for the info at this key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities\{GUID for Identity}\Software\Microsoft\Outlook Express\6.0

Look in the right hand pane of the registry for "Compact Check Count" and reset its value to zero [0] and you will not be bothered again until the count of opening/closing again approaches 100"

Turn off Outlook Express Compress Notification for a while

by lizzz In reply to disable compress in outlo ...

Try this registry change->

Set a system restore point, just in case (Start->All Programs->Accesories->System Tools->System Restore)

Navigate to HKeyCurrentUser\Identities\{youruserid}\Software\Microsoft\Outlook Express\5.0
double-left-click Compact Check Count and make it 0.

Exit.

You'll have to do this every time the notification starts again.

Remove compress messages request in Outlook

by Gordonshelp In reply to disable compress in outlo ...

Add this line to a batchfile. Note it is ONE LINE. I have it in my backup batchfile to run at startup everytime I log on. Outlook wants to compress files when the registry value reaches 100 - resetting it to zero fixes the problem. Check that the path is the same as yours.

reg add "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities\{3228B7EB-E614-4ABE-AD49-AF82F58C2F89}\Software\Microsoft\Outlook Express\5.0" /v "Compact Check Count" /t REG_DWORD /f /d 0
