    Disable Ctrl-Enter in Windows 98

    Locked

    by ytsui ·

I have to setup Windows 98 workstation with high security that we do not want the user to modify our configuration. I cannot find the way to disable Ctrl-Enter in Windows 98,
since Ctrl-Enter can open the property of the short-cut icon. I have searched Microsoft TechNet and some other sites, I have also posted this question to various Forums, however, no one can give me a solution.

You can have the desktop folder and copy it everytime Windows starts. If they make any changes to the desktop, it will be replaced the next time Windows starts by the saved desktop folder you copy.

The only way I have found to achieve this is to map ctrl-enter to a different function. Using a program such as macroexpress http://www.macros.com/files/macex.exe you can even display a text box saying that function has been disabled, run from a networkdrive in browse only and completely hidden mode and users can not modify the macros.

There is a freeware program called Interceptor 95 that will let you lock all windows 95/98 hotkeys and key combonations. We use this program in our public lab to block Alt Clrt Del. Do a web search or go to http://www.tucows.com and down load a copy. Thereis also a product called Centurion Guardian that is a bit of hardware and a small bit of installation software that protect the harddrive on our computers. With this security product you just setup the computer install the hardware and software turna key andyour computer is protected. A user can do anything delete copy install and all you have to do is reboot to get back your original configuration. You might try this.

Are you sure you don’t mean Alt-Enter? Since this key combination has been around from the genesis of the Windows operating system a third party fix or program that intercepts them is about all that is possible. Did you know that Alt-Enter also toggles the MS-DOS Command Prompt between window and full-screen and is the only way you can change from full-screen to windowed. If you do find a third party fix, make sure you don’t loose another aspect of OS or program functionality.

I’ll make a few minor (and possibly incorrect) assumptions before offering a suggestion:

      1. You are using Windows NT and are logging onto a Domain
      2. You are only concerned about desktop icons, and the properties therin.

      Suggestion?
      1. Use mandatory profiles, so that any changes a user might make is reset at next logon.
      2. Disable the desktop icons completely, using policies, thus restricing the user to the start menus.
      3. Disable the run command (and possibly control panel), using policies.
      4. Disable task manager access by policy.

Using a keyboard macro application is a good idea, but easily circumvented if the user has access to task manager.

Be aware though that almost all functions that you may be worried about can be accessedusing the File/Save dialog box in most of the Office applications. A DOS prompt can be started, as can a copy of explorer.

Good luck – securing Windows 98 is a tedious and tricky process. Perhaps NT Workstation would be better foryour purposes, sinc

I agree with one of the other postings–it’s probably alt-enter you want to block and not ctrl-enter. ctrl-enter performs very valid functions in Word Processing and you’ll have a mutiny for sure if you block that. What about mandatory profiles andsystem policies to achieve your objective?

Shortcut keys are a bit hard to disable, I work for a public library and have systems here runng win nt and win98 for public use. I have run into this problem. But I found a good program that locks the system up and only gives access to what you want your users to have. You can customize the security program to lock out what you want to lock up. It takes awile to learn how to fully use the program, But once you learn it,it works really well. You can find more info at this web page page http://www.fortress.com the program is called fortresss 101 from fortress grand corp.

I myself am just starting to get into the realm of restricting users on 98 machines. I used policy editor (poledit.exe)which is found on the 98 installation disk. I just stumbled on it recently, and have not found much documentation for it. It’s tricky buisness; you have many profile levels (registry to user level profiles for example). You can set restrictions for a broad scope of users, or configure per individual. You can restrict just about anything; from total control panel lockout to setting a background that can not be altered. Once you get the hang of it, it’s a powerful tool, and should give you the restrictions you need.

I work for Boeing out on the shop floor PCs. We have people trying to hack into the PCs all the time (Windows 95). I have developed a standard procedure consisting of automated batch files and registry hacks that do a very good job of securing the system. In fact, it automatically reboots the system if they do not logon to the network, but once they are logged on they are restricted from doing anything or running anything unless we allow them to. We even have a locked version of Netscape that only allows access to Intranet and only the site we let them…they cannot change anything. Thing is when you start if you’re quick you can hit CTRL+Esc and end task and that kills everything. I went out to Fortress and got nothing, I cannot find Centurion Guardian, and the tool that looks like it will do what I need is not where they say it is…if you go to Tucows.com Interceptor 95 is no longer available. Now what???
PS. System Policy Editor does not provide the functionality that I need. Didyou get any results?

The commercial software that locks down systems is FORTRES 101 (only one S). The web site is http://www.fortress.com. One of our customers uses it (A public school) and it seems to be very effective. One of the other techs was able to bypass the security because we had to allow hard drive access on certain machines. He was able to edit and save a system file. But most users are completely locked down.
