Disable shortcut for Firefox find?

By Beth Blakely ·
When I'm using Firefox and typing messages in certain forums, etc., I accidentally activate the find feature. I believe it's an apostrophe or slash that triggers it. It's really annoying and I can't make it stop! Is there a way to tweak Firefox shortcuts or simply deactivate that particular one?

Hi Beth,

It's not a shortcut, but a user preference that you need to modify to disable find as you type.

From the Firefox documentation:

"Deactivating it

Find As You Type is currently part of the default install. To turn it off, use:

user_pref ("accessibility.typeaheadfind", false);

Or, to remove it completely, find all files in your installation subdirectories that match *typeaheadfind*, and delete those files."

On my system, I have the option to edit the specific user preference in
about:config

Type about:config in the address bar and press enter. This brings up a long list of hidden preferences.

CAUTION: You can change a lot of browser behavior and functions here. Proceed with caution.

As to the find as you type function itself, it is started in one of 2 ways:

Hitting a "/" activates FAYT to search the text on a page.

Hitting a "'" activates FAYT to search for links only.

Another option is to adjust the timeout to a very short interval.

The extension Keyconfig (http://dorando.emuverse.com/projects/mozilla/readme.html) allows you to configure keyboard shortcuts. It works with Firefox, Thunderbird, and (probably) the Mozilla Suite. Shortcuts defined via a key can be changed. For more details, [1] (http://www.extensionsmirror.nl/index.php?showtopic=254).

[edit]Tips
To set a shortcut to "Ctrl + Space bar", type a space " " (without the quotation marks) in the right box (for the shortcut).
You can add preferences for custom keys to to the prefs.js file in your profile folder to get the described results. All instances of Firefox, Thunderbird, or Mozilla must be closed before editing this file. After editing start the browser and open the Keyconfig window to set your keyboard shortcut. Attention: Don't add these preferences to your user.js file because they are applied again with the next start and the assigned keyboard shortcuts will be deleted.

Hope This Helps
