Disabling IE In Win98

By jmiller ·
I have a Win98 machine that a manager wants blocked from the internet. I'm sure there's a registry hack to prevent IE from opening, but I don't know what it is. Thanks in advance.

Renaming the iexplorer.exe file will allow you to stop access in a sense except the users will be able to use Windows Explorer to access, the other options is do not set the connection settings up, unless users now what the settings are they should not be able to set it up.

Why not just delete it? Also can use policy editor. Hacking the registry is a little severe.

The registry key is located at HKEY_LOCALMACHINE_LOCAL/SOFTWARE
Locate the IE key and right click, you can delete and you may have the option of disabling the key by changing the value.

Why block it? You can just uninstall Internet Explorer and any other connection software. If you need access again, just reinstall the programs! There is no need of hacking, which may cause serious problems in Windows. Try it, you will find you willalso save a lot of disk space!

Yes, you can use the above ideas, but an inventive user will get around most of them. (using the Favorites, using the explorer, etc) I had the same problem until I hit upon
one way to really restrict the internet explorers use. And that is to go into Tools>Internet Options, then Select the content tab, and enable the Content Advisor (assign an admin password). Then on the ratings tab set the ratings level to zero,a nd On the general tab clear the checkbox on "Users can see sites that have no rating". Since a huge portion of websites don't use the content rating system, they won't be able to pull those sites up. This usually makes the user give up in frustration fast. (Sure, they can hunt for content rated sites they can pull up, but it'll be a nasty process...)

- Good Luck!
