Disk Error

By jrowe ·
I have a users' Compaq P733 that had a Disk Error upon bootup. Normally, it would be a diskette in the A: drive. Not this time. We have replaced the hard drive but still get a "boot up" error after imaging it. This is a Windows 95 machine.

2 ideas;

Is the primary partition set as active?

Has the electronics on the floppy, or the controller on the MB gone bad?
To test this, disconnect the floppy, and remove it from BIOS settings.
If you still get the problem, disable the FDD controller in BIOS settings.

If disconnecting the floppy drive fixes the problem, just install a new drive.

Boot computer,when the Startup screen appears
press the designated key to enter BIOS setup
On the configuration panel,check the boot orientation to see if the hard drive is the first drive,if you highlight this line and use the pageup or pagedown keys you should be able to set the orientation
Save and Exit

If you are running Win95b (osr2): It sounds as though you may have BIOS (drive recognition) issues here. If you can boot from the A: drive, run fdisk and get a "fixed disk not found" error, then the unit's BIOS is not recognizing the hard drive.
If the BIOS is recognizing the drive but the drive is larger than 8.4gb, you may have to flash the BIOS to acquire support for that size drive, especially if the image creates a large partition.
More information about the OS, drive size and what you have tried would be helpful in answering this question.
