Display Adapter Configuration

By rjscales ·
Hi,

I'm trying to resurrect an old Dell Inspiron 8000 laptop but every time I turn it on I get an error message "Your display adapter is not configured properly. To correct the problem, click OK to start the Hardware Installation wizard."

The wizard then tries to search for plug & play hardware and comes up with a Standard Display Adapter (VGA). If I then look at the the display in Device Manager the status reads "The loaders for this device cannot load the required drivers. (Code 23)"

If I go to Display Properties/Settings I can only set the screen to 640x480 and 16 Colours.

The laptop is running Windows ME but I don't have any of the original disks. I can see from the BIOS menu that the video adapter is an ATI Rage Mobility 128 AGP 4X but this doesn't seem to be detected once Windows boots up. I have tried Dell forums to no avail and if I run the correct driver from ATI it fails because it can't detect an ATI video adapter!

Thanks,

Richard

DriverGenius

If I were having to deal with bad video drivers on Windows ME, I would use Driver Geinus and let it figure out what was going on. The cost of the program is less than hair replacement surgery from you pulling it out of your head...

No internet

by rjscales In reply to DriverGenius

Thanks for your reply, at the moment I can't "see" the Ethernet connection in Device Manager either so I can't even go online and try to scan and then download drivers. I've got the right driver already loaded according to ATI but the laptop can't "see" the video card when Windows runs.

I'm really stumped with this one!

Or you could hit the Dell Web Site

by OH Smeg In reply to Display Adapter Configura ...

And download the ATI Driver for ME from there

http://supportapj.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?os=WME&osl=EN&catid=-1&impid=-1&servicetag=&SystemID=INS_PNT_P3CG_8000&hidos=WW1&hidlang=en&TabIndex=

Along with any others that you need things like Sound, Modems are quite often not supported by a Windows Install Disc to it's not just the Video.

Tried Dell

Thanks for your reply, I did try Dell and it recognised my service tag but doesn't show any video drivers available at the moment I can't "see" the Ethernet connection in Device Manager either. I've got the right driver already loaded according to ATI but the laptop can't "see" the video card when Windows runs.

ATI has two components

by OH Smeg In reply to Tried Dell

The Driver and the Software Package have you got both installed? If you have open the ATI Software and see if you can change the screen resolutions in there.

It is sometimes the only way to proceed with some ATI Video you leave the Windows Controller alone and use the ATI supplied one. :)

Software fails

by rjscales In reply to ATI has two components

I've tried this:

http://downloads.zdnet.com/abstract.aspx?docid=518419

but it doesn't find the video card to control it so fails to install.

Thanks

How about Unknown Device Identifier then?

by OH Smeg In reply to Software fails

After all it could be a NVidia Chip Set Video Set here Dell show both being available for this Model.

Just in case we might be able to find another one.

Clearly you're not getting anywhere with the one you downloaded.

Driver details

by rjscales In reply to Can you post the link for ...

I downloaded this:

http://downloads.zdnet.com/abstract.aspx?docid=518419

It runs but doesn't find any ATI hardware so fails. I also found a list of drivers in a Microsoft KB and verified that the driver on the laptop is the correct file but again the Device Manager doesn't recognise it.

Thanks

That ATI Driver doesn't support WinME though ...

by OldER Mycroft In reply to Driver details

As it states on the ZDNet site:

Platform: Windows
System Req: Windows NT 4 SP 6Windows 2003 SP 1Windows XP AMD 64-bitWindows XP 64-bit SP 1Windows NT 4 SP 2Windows 2000 SP 1Windows 2003 64-bitWindows 2003 AMD 64-bitWindows XP 64-bit SP 2Windows NT 4 SP 3Windows 2000 SP 2Windows Server 2003 x64 R2Windows 2000Windows

Nor does it specify your GPU:-

This package supports the following driver models:ATI WDM TV Tuner ATI WDM TV Audio Specialized MVD WDM VBI Codec ATI WDM RageTheater Audio ATI WDM RageTheater Video Capture ATI WDM AV Crossbar ATI WDM Bt829 Video Capture ATI WDM Bt829Pro Video Capture Philips WDM Video Decoder

No wonder it doesn't register your hardware.
