Display Driver has stopped Working and has recovered

By thekid1138 ·
This message pops up whenever I play a game on my pc. Then the game freezes for 3+ seconds or just crashes. I have no idea what else to do. I did a clean install of windows. Reloaded all the drivers in safe mode after removing the old ones with Drive cleaner pro. Made sure windows was up to date with all the hotfixes applied. The temp of the card is 55 idle and 65 gaming. Here are my speccs and would appreciate any help.

evga 680i SLI LT motherboard
XFX 8800 GT graphics card
windows vista 32bit
intel core2 duo 2.66ghz

I tried the card on a xp machine and still had the same crashes. Im lost as to what to try next.

What size PSU ??

What power rating is your power supply?
Is it a 'name' brand?

If you did a clean install why did you need Drive Cleaner Pro?

Bingo

I had exactly the same problem - the card doesn't draw a lot of power until you start gaming, then the driver initiates a shutdown cause its running too hot or doesn't get enough power.

I put the same card in a much more powerful box and no problems.

The 8800 does want a lot of power. The recommendation is a 450 watt PSU, and if you are running alot of other cards and drives you might want more.

PSU 680

by thekid1138 In reply to What size PSU ??

PSU unit is a 680w Apevia Iceburg. I tested the temperature of the card. 55c idle and up to 65c gaming. I used drive cleaner pro the first time I needed to uninstall. Then a friend suggested I reformat and start over.

I'm still getting a slightly uneasy feeling about this ...

by OldER Mycroft In reply to PSU 680

But can't really be certain why.

Something is nagging me, but my brain ain't what it used to be.

You originally posted that you "did a clean install of windows. Reloaded all the drivers in safe mode after removing the old ones with Drive cleaner pro. Made sure windows was up to date with all the hotfixes applied."

There's something here that doesn't make sense - did you do a clean install THEN run Drive Cleaner Pro?

Why did you install the drivers in Safe Mode? In Safe Mode the 8800 wouldn't be recognised by the system since it was running on VGA at the point.

If Drive Cleaner Pro is such a good program, why did you then feel the need for a complete re-install?

How much system ram is pushing this setup?

Have you over-clocked this card?

Ending the Problem

by thekid1138 In reply to I'm still getting a sligh ...

There were times that I had to uninstall using drive cleaner pro. I used this program cause it was recommended on other boards. I used it to get rid of the drivers after a clean install, and before I reformatted and installed again. All on the advise of others.
Im pushing 2 gigs of ram and no I have not overclocked the card.
I finally got a hold of their tech support in which they told me RMA the card. So that is where I'm at as of this point.
