DNS deployment

If it is just technical question - here is technical answer: take any DNS Server software and configure your domain with pre-approved (owned) IP addresses. You can use ether Windows or Unix based services.

If you don't have domain name - it's another question. You should register your domain and one of question is "location of your DNS servers" (NS records in DNS).

Best way is to create Master site (Primary DNS) at your place and place Secondary DNS at your Provider. Main thing here is, that Root DNS Servers will provide to requestors only information about location of your DNS servers. For example, you own domain XYZ.ORG. When someone requests address WWW.XYZ.ORG and your ISP DNS does now where it is, it asks Root DNS servers about domain XYZ.ORG. Then it goes to NS.XYZ.ORG and asks IP address of WWW.XYZ.ORG. So, it should be someone who will answer at your side. Sure, next requests will not take so long way because it will be cached in intermediate servers.

Good luck.

Windows 2000 server DNS is very good. Very easy to admin. Have had one running with many sub-domains and replicating with Unix BIND DNS servers for over 1.5 years without a reboot or maintenance.

Also, get a good book on basic TCP/IP. It will have a section on DNS.
