    DNS Issues and advice.

Hi. My companies DNS is being hosted by our ISP. We want to move it in house, so I setup two Windows 2000 standalone servers and added the DNS service. I made one server the Primary DNS server and the other the secondary DNS server, both have publicIP addresses. They can both talk to each other and the updates from the Pri transfer to the Sec. My question is what must I do next to make my DNS servers authoritative for my companies domain name ? Is there and thing else that I need to do for my ISP to transfer the domain to my DNS servers ? And are there any records that I need to add to the servers bofore the transfer is done ?

      This is actually quite easy.

But before you do it make sure that your dns servers can do lookups for other domain names. I am sure you already tested it, put I just want to make sure.

Assuming everything is ok. The way to change the DNS records so that your DNS servers answers queries for your Domain names is to contact the authority who you have your domain name registered with; ie. verisgin, network solutions etc.

As long as you are the Admin contact or an authorized contact for your domain, then you can point your domain name to the dns servers.

I am glad to see that you installed 2 dns servers. The reason I say this is because when you edit your record with the registrar you generally need 2 dns servers.

Next I would transfer all of your contact info for all of your domains over to you. This may seem at times to be a convolted, long and ardurous process. Depending on who you registered your domain name with.

Just make sure that before you request to transferthe pointing of dns servers from your isp’s to yours, that all of your host records are in order on your dns servers.

My congratulations go out to you for taking a good step towards freedom from your ISP.

PS- don’t forget to add reverse lookupzones, service pack both dns servers and close off any services that do not need to be running.

you also need to register your DNS servers out on the Net through Network Solutions. They will ask you for your DNS names these can be absolutely anything. Choose ns1.”yourdomain”.com and ns2.”yourdomain”.com. Then all outside queries to your registered domain names will be pointed to your servers for recursive query answers. Of course if you need resolution only for internel then you need not register the two servers.
