DNS Resolution

By raj_soni36 ·
I m working in Win2000 envoinment where 2800 nodes connected to each other on a single domain.
Sometimes we have to enter the ip address with their name of our member server in the host file of pc's. If our dns server is there and all the PC's havng a DNS entry why we have to do this I mean why DNS not resolving the name of that server automatically.

Are all your workstations Win2K Pro or above? If not, you may need to install a WINS server to ensure name resolution for Win9x workstations. Have you ensured that this particular member server is registering its IP properly on your DNS server? Do you have only one DNS server for all 2800 nodes? If so, it's probably overloaded - you could try adding a second DNS server and see if that helps. Is it only one particular member server that is causing problems? If so, I would look at the TCP/IP stack on that server - maybe uninstalling and reinstalling either the TCP/IP protocol and/or the NIC card drivers would help.

You haven't given any details, so this is a shot in the dark. If nothing seems to hit the mark, try responding with more info. Hope this helps!
