dns setup help

By maddiuex ·
Hi guys, need help. Example - 2 servers, both win2000, an active directory domain server and a DNS server
Active dir is (Server1) a web server and (server2) a DNS server
Ip of server1 is 123.456.789.202 and the server 2 is 123.456.789.203 gw is 123.456.789.1 the server1 dns points to server2 which is the registered dns server. Domain is domain1 and server2 is a BC
How do I Get server2 to point to server1 when a Internet url is typed in. Both machines have true IP address's and can ping both from anywhere. And I have no clue how to do this. I set one up with a NT 4.0 Dns server but, cannot grasp the 2000 dns. When I type in the IP address of Server1, I can bring up the Web page, But when I type in www.example.com , I get notta Help

If I understand your question properly. You need to put a www alias entry for Server 1 in the DNS primary zone defined on Server 2.

Good luck,
Dan

Go to your internet properties,go to connections, and then go to lan settings. In the proxy server settings type in the address field 123.456.789.1 (should be your gateway addres),put what port your using default is 80 we use 8080 and then check the box beside the ip address field and then try it. If that doesn't work try checking both the boxes just in the proxy server area. Also another good thing to do is to put the address of the gateway in hosts file as such
123.456.789.1 gateway

Try this:

In the DNS console on Server2, create in the Forward Lookup Zone branch a new zone called "example.com". The name server for that zone will be Server2. In that new zone, define a new host pointing to Server1. Define next an alias (CNAME) called "www" pointing to Server1.
If your DNS server is still a root DNS (you have a "." zone defined in your forward lookup zones) and you wish to access the Internet, delete the "." zone, close the DNS console, open it again and configure the forwarders (forwarders tab in the properties of the server in DNS console). Forwarders usually are DNS servers from your ISP.
With that, your LAN will be able to reach Server1 through the URL "www.example.com". If you wish the same from outside, you have to register "example.com" on the Internet (e.g. ISP) with the public IP address of your Server2 as IP address of Name Server responsible for that zone.

Wish it will help you.

I have it working, by trial and error, My Forward was www.example.com, and I changed it to example.com. and created the host files. Pointing to the Server. This is what got it working. I came here to close out the question and award no points. But you have the correct answer and deserve the points.. Thanks
